Our Journey Into Small-Scale Fish Farming

Laying the Groundwork for Youth-Led Aquaculture in Malindi

Why We’re Starting Fish Farming

Unemployment and drug use remain serious challenges for youth in Malindi. At Buntwani Beach Youth Group, we believe in hands-on solutions that give young people real skills, steady income, and a better future.

1)Fish farming is a smart option because:
It can be started with little land and low cost
2)It provides a reliable source of food and income
3)It helps youth learn teamwork, responsibility, and business skills

Our fish farming project is still in its early phase — we are now building knowledge, forming teams, and planning pilot ponds.

What We're Doing Now

We’ve started by holding talks and small group sessions with local youth to:

1)Explain how fish farming works
2)Identify those who are interested and committed
3)Start forming working groups with clear roles

We’re working with local experts and government officers to guide the setup and offer basic training on aquaculture for beginners.

Planning the Pilot Phase

The first pilot fish pond will be small and simple. It will help us test what works before expanding. Key plans include:

1)Choosing a secure site near a water source
2)Designing the pond using local materials
3)Deciding which fish to start with — likely tilapia or catfish
4)Setting up water access and basic drainage

We’re also preparing a plan for feeding, cleaning, monitoring fish health, and harvesting — all of which will be done by youth under supervision.

What We Need to Get Started

We’re currently raising support to help cover:

1)Tools and pond materials (liners, tanks, nets)
2)Fingerlings (baby fish) and starter feed
3)Simple water testing kits
4)Basic training and mentorship costs

We welcome donations, technical guidance, and volunteer support from individuals, businesses, and local government.

What Youth Will Learn

This project will serve as a live training ground. Each participant will gain skills in:

1)Pond design and maintenance
2)Fish feeding, health, and growth tracking
3)Cost tracking and sales planning
4)Group work and problem solving

Over time, they can use this experience to manage their own small ponds or expand the group’s operations.
